SAP 3 - Basic Medicare
SDG 3
Good Health and Well-being
Basic Medicare is the third sub-program of GAAS Africa's flagship Sustainable Agenda Promotion (SAP 17), established to support the advancement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 -- Good Health and Well-being. The program is founded on the belief that a healthy population is essential to sustainable development and that people should have the knowledge, awareness and opportunity to make informed decisions about their health. Basic Medicare focuses primarily on health education, prevention, community awareness and connections to appropriate health services, with particular attention to underserved and vulnerable communities.
Many health challenges affecting African communities can be reduced through timely information, preventive practices, early identification of health concerns and appropriate use of available health services. However, barriers such as limited health information, misconceptions, low awareness and difficulties accessing services can prevent individuals and families from taking appropriate action. Basic Medicare seeks to help bridge this information and access gap by bringing practical health education closer to communities and encouraging people to take greater responsibility for their health and well-being.
Promoting Prevention Before Crisis
Basic Medicare emphasizes the principle that prevention, awareness and early action are important components of community health. GAAS Africa will organize educational activities, community campaigns, discussions and outreach initiatives that address relevant health and wellness issues. The program will work with qualified health professionals, healthcare institutions, community organizations and other appropriate partners to ensure that health information is responsible, practical and relevant to local communities.
The program may also facilitate connections between communities and existing healthcare providers for appropriate services, referrals and health-screening activities. GAAS Africa itself does not replace professional medical care; rather, it seeks to strengthen health awareness and connect people with qualified healthcare services.
Basic Medicare will seek to take health education beyond conventional settings and into schools, communities, youth groups, workplaces, households and community organizations. By meeting people where they are, GAAS Africa can encourage wider participation in health-awareness activities and create opportunities for communities to discuss their health priorities.
