Gender Equality
Gender General is the fifth sub-program of GAAS Africa's flagship Sustainable Agenda Promotion (SAP 17), established to advance United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 -- Gender Equality. The program is built on the belief that sustainable development cannot be achieved when women and girls are excluded from opportunities to learn, lead, earn, innovate and participate in decisions affecting their lives and communities. Gender General therefore promotes practical opportunities that support the education, economic participation, leadership, confidence and meaningful community involvement of women and girls across Africa.
Women and girls make significant contributions to households, businesses, agriculture, education, community life and national development, yet many continue to encounter barriers to skills development, economic opportunities, leadership participation, access to information and resources, and equal participation in decision-making. Gender General seeks to help address these challenges by creating pathways through which women and girls can strengthen their capabilities and participate more fully in social and economic development.
Empowering Women to Participate, Lead and Create
Gender General approaches empowerment as more than awareness. The program seeks to connect women and girls with knowledge, skills, mentorship, networks and opportunities that can help them pursue their aspirations. Through workshops, training programs, mentorship, community engagement and partnerships, GAAS Africa will encourage participants to develop practical capabilities that can be applied in education, employment, entrepreneurship, leadership and community development.
The program will also encourage communities to recognize the importance of women's participation and to promote environments in which women and girls can contribute their ideas, talents and abilities. Gender equality is therefore presented not only as a women's issue, but as an important component of strong families, productive communities and sustainable development.
Particular attention will be given to helping girls develop confidence, knowledge, leadership potential and aspirations from an early stage. Through educational activities, mentorship and awareness programs, GAAS Africa seeks to encourage girls to see themselves as future professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, innovators, leaders and community development contributors.
Key Areas of Action
Women's Entrepreneurship
Supporting women and aspiring female entrepreneurs with business knowledge, enterprise development skills, financial literacy and access to relevant networks and opportunities.
Leadership Training
Developing leadership, communication, decision-making, civic participation and organizational skills among women and girls.
Mentorship
Connecting participants with appropriate mentors, professionals, entrepreneurs and community leaders who can provide guidance, knowledge and encouragement.
Economic Empowerment
Promoting access to skills, livelihood opportunities, employment pathways and enterprise development that can strengthen women's economic participation.
Gender Awareness
Educating communities about gender equality, equal opportunity, women's participation and the importance of creating supportive environments for girls and women.
