Life Below Water
Deep Blue is an environmental initiative of Sustainable Agenda Promotion (SAP 17) dedicated to protecting Africa's rivers, lakes, wetlands, coastal areas and marine ecosystems. It recognizes that healthy aquatic ecosystems are essential to human life, supporting drinking water, food production, agriculture, livelihoods, biodiversity, transportation, recreation and economic activity.
Africa's aquatic environments face growing pressures from plastic pollution, poorly managed waste, habitat degradation, pollution, unsustainable resource use and climate-related changes. Deep Blue seeks to increase public understanding of these challenges while encouraging communities, young people, institutions and businesses to become active participants in protecting and restoring aquatic environments.
From Water Awareness to Aquatic Action
Deep Blue is designed to move beyond simply highlighting pollution and environmental degradation. It encourages people to understand aquatic ecosystems, identify threats and participate in practical conservation. Through educational campaigns, clean-up activities, community projects, research, partnerships and awareness programs, participants can develop a stronger connection with the waterways and aquatic environments around them.
Young people can also explore opportunities in environmental research, conservation, technology, entrepreneurship and blue-economy innovation, turning environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable development.
Key Areas of Action
Waterway Clean-ups
Encouraging community-led activities to remove litter and other waste from rivers, lakes, wetlands, beaches and coastal environments. Clean-up activities can also become opportunities for environmental education and community mobilization.
Plastic Pollution Awareness
Helping people understand how improperly discarded plastics can enter waterways and affect aquatic ecosystems. The program promotes responsible consumption, waste reduction, reuse, recycling and better waste-management practices.
Aquatic Ecosystem Education
Increasing awareness about the importance of rivers, wetlands, lakes, coastal ecosystems and marine habitats. Participants can learn about aquatic biodiversity, ecosystem services and the relationship between healthy waterways and healthy communities.
Coastal Conservation
Supporting awareness and community activities that encourage the protection of beaches, coastal habitats and marine environments. The initiative promotes responsible behavior and collaborative approaches to preserving vulnerable coastal areas.
Blue Economy Awareness
Introducing communities and young people to the economic opportunities connected with healthy aquatic ecosystems, including sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, marine research, ecotourism, conservation services and other responsible blue-economy activities.

Our Goal
Deep Blue seeks to contribute to an Africa where rivers, lakes, wetlands, coastlines and marine ecosystems are better understood, valued and protected, while communities recognize their role in maintaining healthy aquatic environments.
By promoting aquatic ecosystem education, pollution prevention, conservation, community action and responsible blue-economy opportunities, the initiative contributes to SDG 14 -- Life Below Water while supporting wider goals related to climate resilience, food security, livelihoods, biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
