SAP 4 — Skill-Box

Education for Sustainable Development

Skill-Box

Skill-Box is the fourth sub-program of GAAS Africa's flagship Sustainable Agenda Promotion (SAP 17), established to advance United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 -- Quality Education. The program is founded on the belief that education should not only provide academic knowledge, but should also equip people with the practical skills, digital capabilities, creativity, confidence and understanding required to participate meaningfully in the development of their communities. Skill-Box therefore creates opportunities for young people, learners, educators and underserved populations to acquire knowledge and develop skills that can support education, employment, entrepreneurship and sustainable development.

Across many African communities, young people have significant potential but may face barriers to quality learning, digital access, practical skills development and educational resources. Skill-Box seeks to help address these challenges by creating accessible learning opportunities and connecting participants with knowledge, training, mentors, educational institutions and development resources. The program is designed to make learning more practical, inclusive and relevant to the changing needs of African society.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Skill-Box promotes the idea that education can happen anywhere, anytime and through many different forms of learning. GAAS Africa will support workshops, seminars, community learning activities, digital education, skills-development sessions, mentorship and other appropriate learning opportunities. Participants can develop skills that complement formal education and help them prepare for real-world opportunities. Areas may include digital literacy, communication, entrepreneurship, vocational capabilities, research, environmental sustainability, leadership and other skills relevant to local needs.

An important component of Skill-Box is SDG Education. Participants will learn about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and how these global objectives relate to everyday challenges within African communities. The program will encourage learners to identify problems around them and consider how education, innovation and practical action can contribute to solutions. In this way, Skill-Box seeks to develop not only skilled individuals, but also informed citizens and future Sustainable Development practitioners.

Key Areas of Action

Our Goal

The program encourages participants to move beyond receiving knowledge to applying what they learn. A participant who acquires digital skills, for example, can use those skills to support an enterprise, conduct research, develop a community initiative or assist others in gaining digital knowledge.
