Responsible Consumption and Production
Pro-Con Balance is a practical environmental initiative of Sustainable Agenda Promotion (SAP 17) focused on encouraging responsible consumption, sustainable production and better management of resources. It promotes the understanding that what people buy, use, produce and discard has consequences for communities, the economy and the environment.
Modern consumption generates enormous amounts of waste while valuable materials are often discarded without recovery. At the same time, many businesses and households can reduce costs and environmental impacts by using resources more efficiently. Pro-Con Balance seeks to help people, communities and enterprises move toward a more responsible relationship with materials and resources.
From Consumption to Responsibility
Pro-Con Balance is designed to help people move from simply consuming resources to understanding their value. Through educational campaigns, workshops, community activities, innovation challenges and partnerships, participants can learn how everyday decisions influence resource use and waste generation. Communities can also explore local solutions for collection, sorting, reuse, recycling, repair and resource recovery.
The initiative encourages young people and entrepreneurs to view responsible consumption and production as an opportunity to develop new products, services, businesses and technologies that address environmental challenges.
Key Areas of Action
Recycling
Promoting the recovery and recycling of materials such as plastics, paper, metals, glass and other recyclable resources. The program encourages communities to understand waste as a potential resource that can be recovered and returned to productive use.
Waste Reduction
Encouraging households, businesses, institutions and communities to reduce unnecessary consumption and minimize waste at its source. Participants learn how thoughtful purchasing, efficient resource use and better planning can reduce the amount of material that ultimately becomes waste.
Reuse & Repair
Promoting the extension of product life through reuse, maintenance, repair, refurbishment and responsible sharing. Instead of automatically discarding damaged or unwanted items, communities are encouraged to explore ways to keep useful products and materials in circulation.
Sustainable Business Practices
Encouraging businesses and entrepreneurs to consider resource efficiency throughout their operations -- from sourcing and production to packaging, distribution and disposal. Sustainable practices can reduce waste while creating opportunities for innovation, efficiency and new forms of enterprise.
Environmental Education
Providing practical education that helps people understand the relationship between consumption, production, waste, natural resources and environmental sustainability. The program encourages informed decisions rather than simply promoting consumption reduction without practical alternatives.
